Our Member’s Stories
So when I received a free week at a local gym, I thought I’d give it a try. I didn’t make it past the initial tour. The machines, the monotony, and the sales pitch all left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Back to yoga and hiking, which didn’t seem so fun in the 115 degree heat. Enter Laveen CrossFit. I wish I could remember the first time I walked into the box, but I can’t. The place seems so much like home to me now that I can’t imagine it any other way. For years I had wanted to try CrossFit. I had heard how it’s a new workout every time, so you never get bored. (Yay for those of us who feel ADD at times!) I also saw my older brother get in the best shape of his life, thanks to CrossFit. It became a place where he could smash stress, build confidence, conquer new challenges, and widen his circle of friends. I’ve had the same experience. That kind of community doesn’t happen by accident. Kristi, Danny, and Freddy have worked hard to established this culture. They set the tone and hand-pick only the best coaches who will affirm these values. It doesn’t matter who is coaching; they are unified on the mission and vision of Laveen CrossFit. If you want to know what that community feels like, imagine the show “Cheers” – but instead of beers, it’s barbells. (“Wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name…”) Yeah, kind of like that.
When I started CrossFit I was at my heaviest weight ever….265 lbs. I was boarder line diabetic, high blood pressure and I had sustained an injury to my knee. Joining Laveen CrossFit changed my life forever. Kristi and all the trainers were dedicated to my full body wellness, physically and mentally, they have shown an excellent knowledge base and know how to get the most out of my workouts even by modifying some of my moves because of my injury. Within six months I lost a total of 20lbs I know I would not have gotten my results on my own, my workouts are challenging and full of variety the absolute best part by far is I feel stronger (mentally and physically) than I have ever been in my entire life. Laveen CrossFit is not only a strong community it’s a family that constantly motivates you through each and every workout I’d recommend Kristi and Laveen CrossFit to anybody. About seven months ago, I finally decided to step out of my comfort zone and try Crossfit for the first time. In the past, I have had memberships at local gyms and found that they just did not work for me. I would dread going and would spend almost two hours trying to fumble my way through a workout and waiting on equipment. I had no one to hold me accountable and would shortly get bored and quit going. As you can imagine, I was not able to reach my fitness goals this way. When Laveen Crossfit opened, I decided to set aside all of my reservations (I could not even do a pushup when I started) and try something new that would challenge me. I soon found out that I did not have to be this elite athlete to start Crossfit because all of the workouts were scaled to meet my athletic ability. Through training and proper instruction, I found myself getting stronger and noticed my body changing. The best part is that I stopped obsessing over the scale and started gauging my progress with the non-scale victories. This change in mindset allowed me to appreciate the process and effort it takes to get fit the right way. Here I am, seven months later, and I cannot imagine stepping in to a regular gym again. I feel stronger and more confident than I have in a very long time and am very proud that I have come this far without the help of diet pills or restrictive eating. As of today, I am not exactly where I want to be in my fitness journey, but I am so much closer than I imagined last year. With the support of the coaches, members, and of course hard work, I have the confidence that I will be there soon.
Six months ago, I had every excuse not to start CrossFit. “I have a membership at LA Fitness”, “The class times do not work with my football coaching schedule”, and whatever else I could think of. Until the day that I sat, yes sat, and watched my wife work out and was convinced to try it. Here I am 6 months later and I “drank” a big glass of the Crossfit kool aid. I am here to share with you guys that I am a Type 2 Diabetic and was insulin and pill dependent to keep my blood sugar under control. Since starting Crossfit I am no longer required to take insulin and have been reduced to taking a half dose of the pills. In addition to getting my diabetes under control, I have lost 20 pounds since I started at CrossFit. I contribute my success to the wonderful and helpful coaches. But, the LC member are just as wonderful and supportive. These are results I received in 6 months that I did not get in 3 years at that place called LA Fitness. Guys and Gals, treat yourself don’t cheat yourself! I am not yet where I want to be but know that I will get there because Laveen CrossFit has not failed me yet. Rontai aka “Coach”
Rontai’s “Coach” Story
I joined LC in hopes of it helping me become a better Triathlete. I was skeptical of Crossfit, because of what I had seen on the internet….injuries, bad movements and bad coaches. My buddy from Texas told me I had to give it a try, but would need to go 3 days a week so I could see the benefit. I met Kristi when I arrived and her excitement along with the vibe of the Box won me over. It has been over 6 months now and I workout 5 to 6 days a week and have forgotten all about being a Triathlete, LOL. The coaches teach with a passion that I have been missing in a Global Gym. They will push you to succeed, but will not sacrifice your technique.
